Personal Floatation Devices at BRYC

The following petition and signatures represent members of Black Rock Yacht Club (BRYC) that support an immediate change to the club pool bylaws. The request is to change the club’s pool rules and hereby permit children that cannot swim on their own or are under the age of six to wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal floatation devices (PFDs) while swimming in the BRYC pool under direct parent or guardian supervision. This petition only requests the use of PFDs, not floaties, rafts, tubes, boogie boards, or the like. The most popular example of a U.S. Coast Guard-approved PFD is the Puddle Jumper.
With BRYC’s new influx of young families with small children, this group feels strongly about bringing this request to the board prior to the start of the Summer 2018 season. While lifeguards are on duty each day, the chairs on which they are positioned are often times not ideal, i.e. sitting on the lap lane chair with no direct access to a child that may be in distress. Additionally, most children need to access the pool from the stairs in the back corner, an area that is furthest away from the guard stands and is heavily trafficked. The plea for PFDs in the pool has been brought to the attention of the pool chair and board several times (and as recent as August 2017). This is the right time to make this change since many young families are joining BRYC.
Beyond the immediate safety concerns, the group also believes changing this bylaw will lead to a greater number of young families wanting to join the wonderful BRYC community. BRYC is currently one of the only, if not the only, members-only club in the Fairfield area that does not permit PFDs. The following local clubs do permit them: Brooklawn Country Club, Country Club of Fairfield, Fairfield Beach Club, Aspetuck Valley Country Club, Milford Yacht Club, Brownson Country Club, Mill River Country Club, Patterson Country Club. Additionally, Fairfield town beaches also permit the use of PFDs.
Thank you for your consideration and support on this important issue regarding the safety of our children. We look forward to many safe and sunkissed seasons at Black Rock Yacht Club.
