An Oswego City School District Coach recalls the story of a young boy whose life was saved by his coach: "During the Spring of 2019 I was coaching JV Boys Lacrosse at Watertown High School. I was speaking with the coach before the game about the lack of athletes in the sport. The coach advised me that the week prior he had a student overdose on heroin on the field. The coach also advised that the only reason the student athlete survived is because his assistant is an EMT who just got off shift and had Narcan still in his pocket. The coach administered Narcan while the head coach called 911, saving the athletes life."

Had the coaching assistant not been there with the life-saving medication in his pocket, the boy would have passed away, leaving his team and everyone surrounding feeling helpless and traumatized. Narcan is an opioid antagonist, which can delay the negative, or even fatal effects of an opioid overdose. This buys the ambulance time to arrive. Not every team can be perfect, and while this may be difficult to accept, it is better to celebrate a heroic deed than it is to pick out funeral attire.

Coaches teach their athletes to be prepared and ready to adapt to any situation; however, in an unfortunate situation like this, coaches are not properly equipped. We can easily prevent a tragedy with a short training session. But first, we need your support so that the Oswego City School District Board of Education knows that we, as the student population, believe that our coaches should be "fully prepared and life ready" in situations like these at all times.
