Fight for Sustainability and Anti-Racism started this petition to Board of education at the University of Waterloo and

The problem our group seeks to address is the lack of education around the interconnectedness between sustainability and systemic racism on campus, though this issue takes place on a global scale as well. We believe that by providing students at the University of Waterloo with insight to global problems caused by unsustainable, colonial ideals via an in-depth course, that we will help shape a student body more understanding of their place in the world and how they can contribute to a more equitable, sustainable society.

We are proposing to create a course within the Faculty of Environment that will be open to all students at the university, that focuses on the importance of sustainability and anti-racism, respectfully, as there is no class pertaining to these specific issues and their relevance within Canada and abroad.

Through this course, we plan to cover topics such as including, but not limited to anti-Black and anti-Indigenous racism, systemic racism and its influence on urban environments, issues of environmental justice, and the diversity of communities on campus. We hope to convey our message using books, articles, and educational videos as external resources.

If you would like to reach out to us regarding our initiative, whether that be with suggestions, comments, or concerns, feel free to email us at jbona@uwaterloo.ca or jmcateer@uwaterloo.ca.
