Darth Vader started this petition to Board of Directors of SPH

In last night's press conference announcing the spinning off of Singapore Press Holdings' news media division into a non-profit organization funded by the government i.e. taxpayers' monies, CEO Ng Yat Chung openly said that he took "umbrage" at a question about journalistic and editorial integrity from a journalist from CNA. He also said that unlike SPH Chairman Dr. Lee Boon Yang, he is "not a gentleman".

Is THIS acceptable behavior from your CEO? The journalist behaved professionally and responsibly at asking this question. He or she must be applauded for his or her courage in raising an issue of public concern like this even though he or she works for the Temasek Holdings owned Mediacorp. This is a question that would, and indeed DID come up in everyone's mind when we heard that henceforth, SPH News will be funded by Singapore government grants. As a professional journalist, he or she has a duty to call out issues of concern to the public. He or she should be commended for this and NOT pilloried for it.

To you, members of the Board of Directors of SPH, is LG Ng's behavior acceptable to you? Unlike the journalist, he did NOT behave in a professional manner. We do not care whether he is a gentleman or not; we DO, however, care that he engaged in bullying a journalist who was only doing his or her job of calling for accountability on issues of public concern in a right and proper manner.

We assume that you are all familiar with the old saying: "If you cannot take the heat, get out of the kitchen". This applies to everyone. It is especially applicable to Chief Executive Officers. Accordingly, in view of his unprofessional behavior in bullying the journalist for asking a question of legitimate public interest, especially ironic considering that SPH's news media division itself is engaged in the same business of journalism, we, the undersigned, call upon you to dismiss LG Ng as CEO of SPH. His dismissal will not be of great loss to the company anyway; if he had done an exemplary job of managing the company, it would not be in the state it is currently. So, do the right thing and remove him as CEO and replace him with a more even-tempered and professional CEO.
