Decision Maker Response
DIane Hutchings, Clay County Commissioner’s response
Sep 27, 2017 — Your frustration is understandable. I want to reassure you that I have not wavered in my commitment to a new more centrally located Animal Services facility. The County has one more payment on our construction bond in October of 2018 and until that debt is retired we will not have the funds available for construction. The commission has requested a 10 year capital plan from staff that will commence in 2018 and provide a road map for addressing this facility as well as many other needs for our county.
The heroic efforts of so many during Hurricane IRMA have not been lost in the recent events nor has the need for adequate facilities. I personally do not believe we can outsource this function of government. We are blessed by the tremendous benefit of private citizens and government working hand in hand to protect our community. I realize the rescue during IRMA was extraordinary and would not for one moment expect those efforts to be considered as a strategy we should count on to care for our homeless animal population.
Thank you for all of your efforts and please stay tuned as we move forward to improve our facilities, location and support services.
