Life Jacket Safety

I'm starting this petition to help make a change in the policy that prohibits children from wearing life jackets on the kiddie water slides at Cove Point Pool in Lusby, MD and the Edward T. Hall Aquatic Center in Prince Frederick, MD. The rule states that children are not allowed to wear life jackets and therefore they must take their life jackets off before going down the slide. When I asked the manager why an organization would encourage children to take off their life jacket around a pool I was told, "because it's the manufacturers recommendation." When asked for information for the manufacturer, the request was denied. I was also told, "maybe your child shouldn't go down the slide if they can't swim." This is not about whether or not a child can swim, this is about teaching children water safety, ALWAYS wearing a life jacket, and preventing children from a near drowning or drowning incident. I am personally never an arms reach away from my kids, and life jackets are not a baby sitter for your kids in the pool, but they do save lives and I do not agree with sending a message to kids that is it ever okay to remove their jackets. In addition, even if a child can swim when they get to the bottom of the slide they can inhale water if they don't have their life jacket to keep them afloat, and dry drowning can happen after the fact. Furthermore, these slides are located in the kiddie pool and are meant for small children who regardless if they can swim should always be encouraged to wear a life jacket. Great Wolf Lodge indoor water park not only allows life jackets on their slides but highly encourages it!! I do not want any child to suffer the consequences of this ignorant rule. Please sign and share this petition and help save the lives.
