50 Ways Rockbridge started this petition to Board Chairman Jay Lewis

This is an exciting year for the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), which is garnering more and more support across the Commonwealth.  In 2017, the Nevada legislature ratified the ERA, making it the 36th state to do so, and in 2018, Illinois became the 37th. Only one more state is needed to cement gender equality in the U.S. Constitution. Virginia is in an excellent position to become the 38th, and final, state needed to ratify the ERA.

The ERA states: “Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States of by a State on account of sex.”  The inclusion of this Amendment in our Constitution will bring our nation in line with so many who have for over a century included gender equality as part and parcel of the laws that govern all of their people.

The organization VA ratify ERA provides information on the ERA, explains why it is still necessary, and breaks down the arguments of its opponents. Advocates for adoption of ERA have successfully advocated for supporting resolutions in the small towns, counties, and cities that make up our commonwealth. To date, 39 localities in Virginia have passed such resolutions or added them to the legislative package they are sending to their representatives in Richmond.

By signing this petition, you are adding your name to those of your neighbors and requesting that the Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors pass a resolution in support of the ERA. You can read the proposed resolution here.
