Regardless of the intended meaning, the Confederate Flag displayed on the public grounds of the South Carolina State House is a polarizing symbol.
While many South Carolinians do sincerely see it as representing their Southern heritage, many other citizens, both regionally and nationally, truly do see it as a symbol of a dark time in our nation’s history. For them it represents America’s institutional slavery and acts of violent racial injustice. In light of the recent tragic events in our hometown of Charleston, SC this is now more apparent than ever.
The BMW AG plant near Spartanburg, SC is a major contributor to the South Carolina economy, and was vital to the resurrection of that region. It helped launch the manufacturing boom South Carolina is currently experiencing. What many may not realize, is that during World War II, BMW utilized concentration camp slave labor in its factories to produce war materials for Hitler’s military.
With the context of history in mind, paired with BMW's rise to international respect and acclaim, we're sure as a responsible corporate citizen the company must be sensitive to this reality.
That is why we would like to request that BMW AG please advise the South Carolina legislature and governor that they do not condone the display of symbols that can be identified with either slavery or racial injustice of any form. That BMW as a responsible corporate citizen of South Carolina feels the removal of this symbol from public grounds would be beneficial to all, and best represent the integrity of its brand. BMW, having successfully overcome a dark chapter in its own history may perhaps be willing to assist the government of South Carolina with this transition.
