VIP internships serve as the culminating experience of our four years at Brien McMahon High School. It presents an opportunity for students to explore individual passions outside of the classroom before embarking on the next step of their academic journey.

The Senior Class is upset at the thought of replacing a hands-on, career-driven and research-oriented experience with more online school. We would like to propose a project that will alleviate the stress of students and teachers alike while providing an engaging, distance-friendly experience.

“At Home Passion Projects” for Seniors will provide our class with both an independent and enriching learning experience similar to Senior VIP. Although it is not the same as a workplace learning program, a passion project program would still satiate the will to learn experientially.

Through “At Home Passion Projects,” we can continue working virtually with Senior VIP Mentors, and we can discuss with them options for us to pursue independent at-home projects. Additionally, with these mentors, we could continue having weekly check-in meetings on Zoom with both our mentors and case managers.

In terms of specific projects that seniors could pursue, we have included some ideas:

Writing and illustrating a children’s book, learning a language, creating an online blog or itinerary, researching capstones, video conferencing with professionals, pursuing scientific research, recording podcasts/movies, writing critiques of films/television/music, drafting novels/plays, filming workout videos, sewing/knitting clothing, learning to code, learning to cook or bake, planting a garden, starting a business or nonprofit organization from home, practicing fine arts like drawing, painting, sketching, tiling, or crafting, doing virtual 3-D architectural modeling, pursuing musical interests through singing or playing an instrument, and creating an album.

The opportunities are numerous.

We believe in the ability of both McMahon's students and faculty not only to adapt to the difficult situations we encounter but to thrive in the face of adversity. Our education has taught us the importance of being resourceful, engaged, and driven both inside of and outside of the classroom. We look forward to applying these skills during our remaining time as BMHS students.

Many thanks for all your hard work and safe wishes.

Sincerely signed,

The Class of 2020
