Mental health days should be considered a reason for absence along with sick days, doctors' appointments, etc. Students must deal with enough during the pandemic. Whether that’s mountains of homework or other activities and work outside of school. It has been shown that depression and anxiety have skyrocketed during the pandemic. It is also scientifically proven that taking a break can help some people focus better. Students would still do the work (make-up work) once they come back. Schools should care about their student's mental health. People struggling with mental health should be allowed to be absent if they don’t want to be around a school environment. An absence would allow a break. Currently, if one wishes to take a mental health day, they have to convince their families and lie about their reason for absence. Blue Valley could promote honesty and the importance of self-care by implementing this. It would also show students' families that mental health is serious and equivalent to physical illness and sets good habits for the rest of people's lives. Students wouldn't take advantage of this policy more than they do of normal sick days. Instead, we would know the real reason people are gone. We need to have trust in people's awareness of their own mental health and their responsibility. If necessary, mental health days could require a check-in with counselors to prevent dishonesty. It would be treated as a normal sick day and people could make their work up on their own. By doing this, we would be placing an equal amount of importance on mental health as we do on physical. By implementing this BV would be taking a step into the future. We would be promoting honesty, good self-care habits, and reminding people the importance of mental health. We know that mental health is as important as physical health. So, why can't we treat it like that?
