Griffy Nature Preserve, 1,179 acres of woods and a 109-acre lake, is one of the favorite parks of many Monroe County residents and visitors, as well as the home of numerous species of thriving flora and fauna.
The city of Bloomington has contracted with White Buffalo, Inc. to launch a sharpshoot of up to 100 deer. If this deer kill plan goes through, Griffy Nature Preserve will be closed to the public for periods of time between November 15, 2014 and February 28, 2015, so that White Buffalo can set out bait stations to lure deer in for their sharpshooters to kill.
Based on a study conducted on IU land by several members of the IU Biology department and their assistants -- a study which does not prove an over-population of deer in Griffy Nature Preserve -- the city's plan is both unnecessary and unsustainable, and diverts focus and funding from measures the city could be taking to help real problems which exist in our area.
Some residents have concerns about neighborhood deer. The city's planned deer kill in Griffy Nature Preserve will do nothing to address the neighborhood herd. These issues with neighborhood deer could be addressed effectively without killing, if our city administrators would disengage from the misguided push to launch a kill in Griffy Nature Preserve and instead focus on creating effective, humane policy for our green spaces and wildlife.
Those who oppose the Griffy deer kill are a diverse bunch, of varied stripes and many different walks of life.
