For various reasons, not everyone in Bloomington has a place to live. However, every person in this city deserves the right to both ask for help and help others in our shared space, including downtown.

We - students, teachers, faculty, people with and without homes – are appalled with the lack of empathy the city has expressed by signs discouraging people from giving money when asked. The discriminatory undertones of the anti-panhandling signs are unacceptable. We advocate for people to have agency over their bodies and lives. This means agency to go to shelters, but it also means agency to ask community members for assistance individually. We refuse to prioritize concerns for business profit or tourist aesthetics over agency of individuals in the community.

The discriminatory anti-panhandling signs, especially in the downtown area, send a message of rejection and hostility to people who are already in a very difficult place. It is ok to encouraging people to support social services, as the signs do. However, it is not ok to discourage people from asking for money or giving it to others, and it is absolutely unacceptable for the city to further isolate and stigmatize people without homes.

We demand the discriminatory anti-panhandling signs be removed. To emphasized the importance of removing these signs and to show our support for those who are not fortunate as others in society we are asking for 5,000 signatures. We want to take this to legislatures and become a change for the better!
