Same Crime, Same Sentencing

Same Crime, Same Sentencing

Racial disparity in the prison and prison time is still an issue. Black men who commit the same crime as white men receive on average a 2.5% longer time in prison. The judicial system should fix this inequality. Racially biased and heavy handed policies from the 1980s and 1990s that put people in prisons for life with and without parole needs to be re-examined. Sentencing that involved drugs like marijuana that is now legal in many states must be reviewed again. Some example solutions include: removing mandatory sentencing, require prospective and retroactive racial impact statements for all criminal statutes, and decriminalizing low level drug offenses. Please join me for my petition to raise awareness to the issue.
