Blantyre Park Dog Owners started this petition to Blantyre Park neighbours and

Blantyre Park is located 180 Fallingbrook Road in the Upper Beaches area of Toronto, Ontario. We are writing this petition in hopes of getting an enclosed section of the park converted to an official off leash dog area.

Blantyre Park is a big, open, grassy, area located where the triangle of Fallingbrook Rd, Blantyre Ave and Clonmore Dr. meet.  It is and has been used by the community as an “unofficial dog park” for years.  Many dog owners in the community let their dogs run free and play—trying to share park space with people and children using the baseball diamond, pool, gazebo, playground, hills for sledding and a mostly unused horseshoe pit.

One of the main reasons it is important to have a specific area in Blantyre Park changed to an enclosed and official dog park section is for the safety of the all the dogs in our community. The park is wide open with busy traffic on all three streets which surround it.  Dogs can easily run out of the park into oncoming traffic, which could mean being hit and injured, or even worse, killed.  This very unfortunate reality requires an urgent solution.  The use of the park by dog owners has been growing exponentially; more and more condominiums are being built in the neighborhood within walking distance to the park (condominium dwellers do not have the option of using a backyard for their pet), and with COVID there has been an increase dog owners surrounding the park as well frequency in visits to the park (work from home and lockdowns have made that possible).  The solution is simple:  turn the unused horseshoe pit, which is an already enclosed section with fencing, into an offleash closed area for neighborhood dogs.  Alternatively if the horseshoe pit doesn't work, create a small and closed fenced in space somewhere else in the park.

Having a portion of Blantyre Park as an enclosed and official dog park section in the park will ensure that dog owners enjoy the safety of a fenced in dog park where they know their dog is safe to run free and play with other dogs. Because we do know that accidents happen from time to time, having a separated dog park will also prevent any unfortunate accidents in the park between dogs and children (either in the playground or on the hill sledding), dogs running into baseball games or getting injured and hit by a baseball, anyone using the gazebo  and most importantly,  ensuring no dogs will run into any of the 3 streets that surround the park.

Please sign this petition to encourage the City of Toronto and Councillor for this ward, Gary Crawford, to make some important changes to continue to keep all dogs, children and community members safe.
