Why this petition matters

Started by Ryan Swinburnson

The purpose of this petition is to provide a unified voice to support the return of students to in-person, in-class learning.

Blaine School District has extended the online format of learning indefinitely.  They have made their decision based on the Whatcom County Health Department's recommendation to not return to in-person learning.  That recommendation has caused the School District's Insurance provider to indicate that insurance coverage would not be afforded to the school if they went against the County Heath recommendation. Both the CDC and Dr. Fauci have recently recommended the return to in-person learning because of the statistically minimal likelihood of contracting and transmitting Covid-19 through school-age children.  The State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Chris Reykdal, recently testified that distance learning is not working for a lot of kids.

The parents of students have seen the effects of remote learning.  Our children are isolated.  Our children are relegated to trying to learn by staring at a computer screen for a minimum of four hours a day in complete solitude.  Middle School and High School students have not been in a classroom for 262 days.

The Blaine schools are equipped to handle both in-person and online learning through their hybrid model.  Other schools in Whatcom County have safely and effectively returned to their  classrooms.  The time is now for our children to return to school.  The cure must not be allowed to be worse than the problem.
