To my fellow students of Blackburn:

Our current attendance policy that most professors follow does not allow students to be ill. We can only have our absence excused if it is a Blackburn Sanctioned event, aka sports. Most won't even accept a doctor's note.

I have experienced this personally on multiple occasions. I did in the Fall 2018 semester after I had broken my ankle. At that time there was not a temporary disability in the accommodations portion. I was obviously broken and had doctor's notes for most of the time that was missed, but only a few would accept my doctor's note. The rest were going to penalize me over an injury that I could not help. I also had this experience recently (Fall 2019) when I was out with pink eye. It started out with being thought to have been caused by allergies but even after antihistamine drops, my eye was still blurry and stung. After a doctor's visit that Friday, I found out I had pink eye caused by an infection, so I was contagious all week and if I had been in classes, I would have no doubt infected others. A few of my professors are not allowing these absence to be excused because it was not a Blackburn sanctioned event.

I believe that this policy is ridiculous and needs to be changed to include the entire student body, not just those in athletics or other Blackburn sanctioned events. This policy does not keep the entire student body in mind and for a school that states that it cares for everyone regardless, this policy should not be changed. I believe if we want this change to happen then we need to fight for it.
