Petition for the Retention of Lou Turner as the African-American Studies Advisor

This petition had 474 supporters

Mr. Lou Turner is currently facing termination from his position as curriculum coordinator and advisor in the Department of African American Studies (DAAS) after the completion of the Spring 2017 semester.  We, the Black United Front UIUC (BUF), believe that it is his history of support for Black student activists and his fierce defense of the principles of African American Studies against neoliberal assaults on higher education that has brought about these unfortunate circumstances.  We have learned that it is the department head of DAAS, Dr. Ronald Bailey, who makes the final decision on Mr. Turner’s continued employment here.  Through this petition, we hope to mobilize our campus community to force Dr. Bailey not to terminate Mr. Turner’s employment.

Mr. Turner is an invaluable member of the DAAS and his termination would be a great loss for students who have formed relationships with him as well as any student who interacts with the department.  Students have received immeasurable academic, extracurricular and personal guidance from Mr. Turner. His experience and expertise in African-American studies have benefitted students' education for years. Finally, his willingness to support Black students in their efforts to not only achieve success in higher education but also to thrive in their career and create change in their communities sets him apart from many other faculty and staff members. Mr. Turner's passion for getting to know and help Black students on their educational journey makes him one of the most indispensable assets to the department.

The undersigned demand that the decision to terminate Mr. Turner be immediately reversed, and that he be invited by DAAS to remain in his current position.

We also invite any supporters of this petition to contact the head of the Department of African American, Dr. Ronald Bailey, through email (rwbailey@illinois.edu) or the department’s phone (217-333-7781) to demand that he reverse his decision to terminate such a valuable asset to the Black campus community.
