Black Lives Matter VT Demands Resignation of Milton Superintendent

This petition is in demand of the resignation of superintendent Ann Bradshaw in light of her failure to address racial harassment in the Milton School District.
During the week of June 5, 2017, a student was called a “nigger” by a peer and told she was not liked and unwelcome at the school. The student’s teacher, school officer, and principal failed to address the harassment, and the victim was suspended from school, along with two other students who expressed support for the victim. On Friday, June 9, 2017, the mother of the student, supported by Black Lives Matter VT, met with Ann Bradshaw to discuss the incident. They did not receive a satisfactory resolution, and it is still unclear why the victim and her supporters were suspended.
Ann’s attempt to address the issue has been inadequate. It is important to note this is not an isolated incident; many students of color in the Milton School District have experienced racial harassment including but not limited to having been spit in the face, name-calling, students participating in blackface and racial mockery, and other acts of aggression. The administration’s failure to support students of color perpetuates the legacy of racial harassment, bullying, and other atrocities the Milton School District has become known for.
In 1999, the Vermont Advisory Committee to the United States Commission on Human Rights exposed the pervasiveness of racial harassment in Vermont public schools. 18 years after the report, students of color still do not feel safe and are unfairly punished when they confront their harassers, as in the case of this student who was suspended for voicing complaints in response to racial harassment. This is unacceptable.
Our community will not tolerate racial aggression in our schools. The district needs to educate the administration, faculty, and staff on diversity issues. There must be consequences for any member of the school district, student or otherwise, who engages in any form of racial aggression. Our students must receive equal treatment regardless of their race; they deserve a supportive and positive school environment free from racial aggression. Milton School District cannot be that place under the leadership of Ann Bradshaw.
