More Black faculty, diversity training for employees, and response or re-written statement
Why this petition matters
As an alum that makes a monthly contribution, it is even more pertinent that I ensure Bethel University (TN) is a safe and secure place for other Black students. I find that President Butler's statement is important but ineffective. Timely, but timid.
I have so often heard, and I am sure you have too, that it is not so much about what one says, as much as it is about what one does not say. The vast majority of President Butler’s assertions miss the mark. No mention of racism. No mention of police brutality. Not a word about white supremacy Not even the name George Floyd. Just careful Christian coded rhetoric that is and has been circuitous in the wake of racial atrocities. I passionately admonish you today that this is not enough - not by a long shot. Say his name. Say her name. Say our name. Enough is enough for standing behind the scenes of white fragility by being politically correct. You are the President of Bethel University. Ensure Black students that Bethel is a place where they can exercise what it truly means to “Be You.”We are requesting three things:
1. More Black faculty members. The faculty is not reflective of student diversity. During my time at Bethel (2004-2009) and two years as a staff member, I had a grand whopping total of one Black professor. My guess is that times have not changed much.
2. Required diversity training for faculty and staff members each semester.
3. A response or rewritten statement including specific names of Black persons murdered at the hands of white supremacy, racism, and police brutality
