Stop the new Mega Prison in Leicestershire

We, the undersigned, are calling for a rejection of the proposed mega prison in Leicester at the site of HMP Glen Parva.

The supposed ‘economic benefits’ will not outweigh the social harm caused by this prison, and the wider prison system in our society. The UK’s over reliance on policing, prosecution and punishment is socially harmful, economically wasteful, environmentally damaging and prevents us from tackling social problems. Re-offending rates remain high, victims needs go unmet and social problems such as poverty, substance misuse and domestic violence continue to grow. A new prison will not solve these issues and will enable greater numbers of people to be imprisoned, affecting their lives in a traumatic and disruptive way. Prisons disproportionately harm people of colour, the homeless, adults with mental health issues and learning disabilities, LGBTQ communities and those without social support, such as care leavers.

What we need is more funding for our local services which can help prevent people from going to prison. This includes better social housing provision, alcohol and drug services, mental health support, homeless shelters and crisis centres. The Government’s £1.5 billion prison building program could be better invested in these essential services. We call on the Local, District and City Councils to reject the plans for a new prison in Leicester. We need to build safe and healthy communities – not prisons.
