Why this petition matters

For years seniors at Boston Latin Academy (BLA) have had the privilege to leave school if they had a study hall during the last period. This policy was usually implemented during the third term which gave seniors another thing to look forward to before they graduate.

This privilege has been taken away from students for reasons that are unclear. The "new" rule in place is that if you are 18 years old you can sign yourself out of school and go wherever need be. This is extremely unfair to a number of the senior class who will not be 18 until later in the school year or even after the school year ends.

If such a student is under the age of 18 a parent or guardian has to physically come to the school and sign the student out. Where many students are under the age of 18 and drive themselves to school it doesn't make sense for a parent or guardian to have to come to and inside the building to sign the student out.

You would think that with the rising number of Covid cases that it would make sense to allow students in the senior class of any age to leave school on their own. This would reduce the number of students in school during and even after school hours. Since the start of covid students have been stripped from so much which is understandable but the thought of "Senior Privileges" gives us a sense of normalcy.

With the amount of stress put on students, you would think that there would be a little more leniency on students specifically seniors struggling to get through the hardest year during their time in high school and an ongoing pandemic.
