For the past year and a half at Bishop Shanahan High School, we have been allowed to carry our backpacks around the school. Both I and my classmates have seen a positive change because of being allowed to carry around backpacks. Including having access to all the necessities for our everyday classes allowing for us to be able to carry things easily. With backpacks, students are able to get to class faster and more efficiently. But if the school goes back to the original structure implemented before covid which using lockers but being able to carry a drawstring bag. This would in turn have a negative effect on both the students and their mental heath. There would be more time spent at lockers causing crowding in the hallways to take away others' ability to get to their class without being late. Some people including me have lockers not close to their homerooms or any of their classes making it inconvenient to go to them. Considering this people like me are unable to go to their lockers during school causing us to carry all materials to every class of the day. Finally, there is no difference between being allowed to carry around a drawstring bag and a backpack. The main difference is less space to carry your belongings.  Even if the school is concerned about students not leaving their phones in their lockers even with the change students will still find a way to bring their phones to class whether or not they have backpacks. This includes putting them in the pockets of skirts, pencil cases, and binders, etc. Please consider signing this petition to continue the positive environment present at the school.
