On November 9th and 10th, Birth Kuwait, along with co-organizers the Kuwait Breast Feeding Promotion Committee, the Lactation Unit at Adan Hospital and 6beya and media partner derwaza media, will host the Birth and Breastfeeding Conference 2018 at the Marina Hotel in Kuwait City. The program, which is aimed at both parents and health care workers, features keynote speaker Dr. Jack Newman and several prominent lactation experts.
The conference's platinum sponsor is Medela - which markets its infant feeding teat in contravention of the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes and relevant subsequent resolutions.
Medela Kuwait is part of the global Medela brand and both markets and distributes the Calma teat in Kuwait (through distributor Advanced Technology Company K.S.C. https://www.medela.com/company/services/local-contact?distributor=/K-O/Kuwait
We call on the organizers to immediately:
- Remove Medela as a sponsor of the Kuwait Birth and Breastfeeding Conference and delete the logo from all digital, social media and printed materials yet to be distributed
- Make a public statement recognizing that Medela does not abide by its obligations under the Code in Kuwait and re-affirming the organizer's commitment to the Code, posting the public statement to the conference's website, social media outlets and a printed copy included for all participants
- Create a policy regarding Code violating sponsors and exhibitors for all future events that is posted on a public facing page
