"Birks hasn’t accepted the position yet, and she’s been seeking advice about whether she should. If she does want the job, she’ll still need to undergo a background check and negotiate a contract, subject to the board’s approval."
Dr. Birks, there's no doubt in my mind that you are a leader in your field with a very impressive background. That is clear. We are a community of concerned parents, well educated professionals, some of whom benefited from an educational model (Bank Street) that you are more than likely familiar with having been trained at TC. As such I am sure you can understand our concerns with the process that an overwhelming amount of parents are reporting having been left out of by our BOE. This calls to my attention a much larger concern for the personal interests that some of our BOE members are displaying by not showing interest in the concerns of the public that voted for them. For this reason in addition to the fact that we have found a candidate with a background that meets with the needs of our students and families who are your ultimate clients, I'm asking for you to use your power elsewhere within a community that needs and wants you more. Please don't take this position. You are successful and will continue to be successful and not taking this role will not hurt your trajectory. However, perhaps some of your initiatives for our schools will hurt more than help our district. We are not willing to experiment with the education of our children. Please allow the better candidate to step forward. That is the right thing to do as an individual who is committed to listening to the needs and desires of the community he or she serves. We are parents and we know the process. We deserve to have a voice in decisions affecting our children. Unfortunately our Board of Education has lost sight of the fact that we voted them into their positions and will vote again. Please listen to the parents. We are your potential clients.
