N A started this petition to Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Industry Leaders

Our goal is to conserve the world's four horseshoe crab species through education about horseshoe crabs, and through activism that urges pharmaceutical and biomedical company leaders to employ sustainable practices and/or offer alternative endotoxin testing methods as opposed to the use of horseshoe crab blood.

  • Horseshoe crabs have been in existence for 450 million years. They have survived ice ages and mass extinctions but are in great decline globally because of over harvesting and loss of habitat.
  • Horseshoe crabs play an important ecological role in the food web. A decline in the number of horseshoe crabs will impact other species, particularly shorebirds and sea turtles, a federally-listed threatened species that uses the Chesapeake Bay as a summer nursery area.
  • The Atlantic horseshoe crab species is only just beginning to show signs of recovery along some of its spawning range, after years of over harvesting for use as bait in conch and eel fisheries, as well as the production of LAL for the global pharmaceutical/biomedical industry.
  • Three of the world's four horseshoe crabs species inhabit Asia and are close to extinction due to unsustainable harvesting for pharmaceutical/biomedical purposes, human consumption, and loss of habitat throughout its spawning range.
  • Horseshoe crab blood is used to create LAL (in the US) and TAL (in Asia).
  • LAL and TAL are used globally by the pharmaceutical and biomedical industry to detect the presence of endotoxins in parenteral drugs and implantable medical devices (i.e. pacemakers, artificial joints, intravenous drugs, etc) in both humans and animals.
  • The rapid decline of the three Asian Horseshoe crab species will place additional pressure on the harvesting of the Atlantic Horseshoe crab for LAL.
  • There are alternative endotoxin testing methods that can be used in place of horseshoe crab blood.
  • Eli Lilly has taken a proactive stance on this issue and has made the switch to one of the alternative endotoxin testing methods.

Call to Action:
We the undersigned, urge pharmaceutical and biomedical company leaders to join our initiative to conserve the world’s four horseshoe crab species by purchasing their endotoxin testing materials from endotoxin detection testing producers both in the USA and in China, who employ sustainable practices and/or offer alternative endotoxin testing methods as opposed to the use of horseshoe crab blood.

G. A. Stetson Middle School’s First Lego League (FLL) team, Robocalypse is the 1st group of young civic-minded citizens to join the Ecological Research and Development Group’s (ERDG) “Protecting Health Initiative" to conserve the world’s four horseshoe crab species.
