Why this petition matters

On Friday, November 20th, 2020, The Binghamton University Theater department hosted an informational session on their production of Twilight Los Angeles, 1992. In this meeting, students came forward with concerns about inappropriate racial casting. The department dismissed these concerns, and many students left the meeting feeling, among many things, disappointed and insulted.
We believe that this department's choice to continue the production of Twilight Los Angeles, 1992 in this manner will perpetuate outdated and harmful stereotypes, tropes, and caricatures of race to the detriment of audiences and the student body.
To Binghamton University: We are not asking for a compromise, and we are not asking for an apology. We are asking for a change. The Binghamton Theater Department can no longer hide behind personal agendas. With every resource available, this department must actively fight to be anti-racist. The students of this University deserve nothing less. The Binghamton Theater Department's Production of Twilight Los Angeles, 1992 cannot continue.
We ask for your help. We can no longer remain silent without becoming complicit in the actions of this department. This production of Twilight Los Angeles, 1992 must be cancelled.
