The Issue

In light of the recently publicized allegations against American Labor Leader and Civil Rights Activist Cesar Chavez, the city of Portland is considering a name change for Cesar E. Chavez Boulevard (formerly know as 39th Avenue).

I created this petition to measure public support for formally renaming 39th Avenue to "Bill Walton Boulevard".  William Theodore Walton III (November 5, 1952 – May 27, 2024) was an American basketball player and television sportscaster.  Bill was a pivotal member of the Portland Trailblazers from 1974 to 1979, and played a major part in the Blazers winning their first (and so far, only) NBA Championship during the 1976-1977 season.  He is a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame.  Beyond his exploits on the court, Bill would go on to have a legendary broadcasting career.  Also, Bill was a devoted "Deadhead", having attended more that 850 Grateful Dead shows during his life.

Residents or Portland, I implore you - Bill Walton may not be a native son of Portland or Oregon, but he cemented his spot in our city's history.  Let's let City Hall know that we want to honor Bill's legacy by renaming one of it's busiest streets "BILL WALTON BOULEVARD"

Folks, you know what to do… SIGN THE PETITION TODAY!

P.S... RIP CITY!
