Rent prices and food prices make it impossible to live on New start amount. I am of mature age and after I lost my job due to company closed down I have been struggling to find new work. We don't smoke or drink but as a single mum I can not even pay my rent and buy food with present New start. And yes - I would prefer to rather have a job. You paying Job Agencies to help those trying to get a job - absolute waste of money!!! Use that money and add it to the New start allowance. Let Job agencies work for their money.

I'm struggling to live, I'm looking at selling my property to be able to afford to live, and being 57 years old it is harder to get work.

There is no way I could live on $40 per day if I lived alone. What I get per fortnight from Centrelink would only just pay my fortnightly rent. AFter that, I wouldn't eat, can't put fuel in the car, can't pay other bills. Newstart/JobSeeker needs to be increased by $300 per fortnight.

Also, I'm 58, and have earned my stripes working my bottom off, paying my taxes, and yet, I'm reduced now to living on $40 per day? What a slap in the face for hard-working retirement-age people!

I'm determined never to end up on newstart. But the people who have to are not bludgers but those down on their luck. Their job becomes survival, with stress and depression taking hold when for too long being turned down for the hundreds of jobs applied for, being called a bludge, druggo, going hungry to pay bills. Struggling with the basics of survival and outcasted will erode anyone's ability to look long term, to have hope, enthusiasm or gratitude. It is a trap, there isnt enough to invest in oneself in anyway in order to get a job. In some places, it can be hugely debilitating in every way. That's not a smart system, but a deeply flawed one conceived by the privileged who are out of touch with humanity and true leadership qualities such as mercy compassion and own example on things that we want to see in the world more, not less. The day i walk into centrelink and say f off entirely will be the best day of my life. The rich dont learn generousity, the poor do, but war and natural disasters downturns do not discrimminate and you cant take $$$ with you when you die, nor does $$$ make you a worthwhile person while you live. You can name a leader. Leadership positively affects and inspires far beyond oneself, for ages to come. Investing in people who can invest then in themselves is obvious. Sometimes you need to believe in others for them to believe in themselves- the strong builds others up and the chain is only as strong as the weakest links- and so on. It is nonsensical that people have food only to starve, and have to choose roof or food daily.
