This is what L. Brooks Patterson said, "I made a prediction a long time ago, and it’s come to pass. I said, ‘What we’re going to do is turn Detroit into an Indian reservation, where we herd all the Indians into the city, build a fence around it, and then throw in the blankets and corn."
The Native American people should be apologized to also, not just Mike Duggan, the Mayor of Detroit. If you felt what you said was wrong enough to apologize to then what you said was wrong for all people involved.
“I regret that something I said 30 years ago is causing such consternation today. I have worked hard to build good relationships with some of the past mayors of Detroit. I do not intend for The New Yorker article to damage my relationship with Mayor Duggan and I look forward to working with him over the next four years.
“I want to remind Mayor Duggan of what I said at the Big 4 Luncheon at the Auto Show last week and these are my true feelings: That I want to work with him, and I want to make sure that any project that he has that I can be supportive of, to give me a call."
The remarks are racist and demeaning because the Native American were herded from lands that they loved and placed on barren places to barely survive. People died on these removals. The Trail of Tears happened.
Also thousands of Native American men, women & children died from the blankets and corn, that we were given when this country was being invaded. Entire villages of people were callously murdered and to bring up that painful history while bragging about how your county is so much better is beyond disgusting. Would you brag or joke about the halocaust? I bet not.
I find it hard to believe that a person of your background and education can not see that what they did was wrong and work to make amends. L. Brooks Patterson ,you need to apologize to the Native American people.
