After teaching 35 years in Tennessee public education I retired before I really wanted to retire. I retired because I was tired of wondering if I would have job the next school because of student's test scores. I live in the real world and some people do not because there are students that do well on the test because they care and you have those that could care less. It isn't a fair measuring or evaluation of a teacher's skills.

Standardized testing is being used as justificatio for punishing my child because she KNOWS the material, but has issues with timed tests.
The test does not accurately dosplay her ability and is hirting her long term.

I'm signing because ny fourth grade students work hard everyday and show me what they know at the end of the week with a common assessment. Why must we continue to test them and test them when they show us each and everyday what they already know? Why can't the teachers be trusted enough to use the knowledge of THEIR stduents to make decisions about how to move forward? Why must you test them for let's say 2 solid weeks for 7 hours? Do you really think this information will be accurate?

I believe the tests are not a fair evaluation of a teacher's, or school's, ability to teach their students. The TNReady test creates an environment that no longer teaches our students important and practical knowledge, but rather teaches specifically to a test. This kind of atmosphere is not fair to either students or teachers and creates unneeded, unfair, and undue stress among teachers, students and administrators.

Data should not be used for evaluating teachers. Evaluations should be face to face. And Just because a teacher may have bad data but data should not be part of the process.

it is counterproductive to have students being taught to a test rather than learning what they really should be taught in school.

I'm signing because even though this is a petition for teachers, I believe it can help students later on as well.

The TNReady test was poorly prepared. A sample of the test questions that my daughter brought home was so vaguely written it was difficult for even an adult to understand. I disagree with the emphasis on standardized testing which leads to standardized teaching. Children need interaction and play to learn the most important life skills of problem solving, teamwork. Teaching is both an art and a science. Forcing standardization takes away a teacher's ability to use methods that work best for them and the personalities of the children in their classroom. We are putting young adults into the world who have higher academic ability, but who fail miserably in the real world due to lack of the people skills that can only be developed through free play and interaction with others.
