Urge Haslam not to deny foster children their loving family.
I am speaking in regards to HB1111, the "Natural and Ordinary Meaning," bill. This bill aims to "simplify" the interpretation of law by requiring literal interpretations of statements such as (but not limited to), "husband," "wife," "mother," and "father."

This bill, if signed into law, would deter Tennesseans from becoming foster parents. It specifically would deter LGBTQ foster parents.
We have a crisis right now, and it's the number of adoptable foster children without loving homes. Embracing LGBTQ couples, supporting their desire to adopt, and protecting their parental rights is one answer to this crisis.
Very few foster parents become foster parents with no intention of ever adopting a child, so it is entirely reasonable to believe we would see a decline in LGBTQ foster parents if they could not BOTH adopt a child.
This bill would only allow one parent in a same-sex relationship to be the legal adoptive parent.
How heartbreaking would it be for an adopted child and parents if something happened to the one legal adoptive parent? The other parent would have no rights to their own child.
I've only pointed to one problem with this bill, but it has a far-reaching impact on women's rights, property law, and same-sex marriage.
This bill would be a shameful disaster, bringing only lawsuits, hearbrake, hate crimes and chaos.
Please make it your duty to urge Governor Haslam to protect Tennesseans from this bill and others like it.
