Racial profiling is a problem that innocent people face whenever they are stopped, questioned, or arrested by authorities simply because of their race or ethnicity.

One of the main contributors of racial profiling is the law itself and how states in the U.S still do not enforce stricter laws on the matter. Moreover, a person’s looks are the determining factor of racial profiling, and in turn it makes the affected individual feel unsafe and under-appreciated. Additionally, racial profiling is becoming more common in recent years, with people having to worry about being stopped by the police soley because of their race and the high crime rate their race holds. Racial profiling also comes from stereotypes that people hold after a specific unfortunate event takes place, like the 9/11 attacks and the recent crisis regarding illegal immigrants, and even the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the NAACP, the number of people incarcerated in America increased from roughly 500,000 to over 2.2 million¨ [,] [with] African Americans [being] incarcerated at more than 5 times the rate of whites¨ , which is a direct result of racial profiling. Racial profiling often leads to prosecution, and there is no doubt that people of color are sentenced to do more time in prison in comparison to white people.

Some individuals might say that racial profiling is implemented in order to further protect the Nation and reduce crime, but it further validizes stereotypes and fear of others, not to mention it further inclements racism. Minorities help run the nation along with white people, not to mention that the United States was built with the help of immigrants. The highest crime rates are located in poor neighborhoods, so a possible solution of reducing mass incarceration could be investing more money on the affected neighborhoods’ education in order to inspire people to achieve more.

In that case, people should learn to see beyond the outer boundaries and the stereotypes that society has inflicted on every ethnic group, as all of humanity is equal in the end and all should receive the same treatment as individuals.

Please help spread the message so that Illinois and other states implement stricter laws regarding racial profiling.
