Stop the Shabbat sirens in Brooklyn
Long time residents of Bed Stuy Brooklyn are outraged at the recent installation of a military grade air raid siren on the roof of the Bais Yaakov Nechemia D’satmar Synagogue located at 690 Myrtle Avenue. The siren blasts directly outside residents windows at levels that will cause permanent hearing loss (recorded by the DEP at 106db). Using an emergency signal to sound the upcoming Shabbat (and other religious holidays) is completely unreasonable and damaging to the health and well-being of local residents (not to mention making real emergency signals inaudible). We understand and respect the rights of everyone to practice their religion as they please but not at the expense of others health and quality of life. We the undersigned ask that the siren be replaced with something less invasive.
"I respect a congregation's wish to communicate with its members, but un-negotiated health-threatening aggression against neighbours is antireligious, antisocial and ultimately only benefits antisemitism."
