Do not take down the monument honoring Christopher Columbus

We, the signers of this petition, demand that the New York City Council, along with the Office of the Mayor, abandons its announced intentions to consider removing the statue of Columbus from Columbus Circle in Manhattan.
It is important that America continues to remember its history and the individuals that helped to shape it. Unfortunately, we are witnessing an ill-conceived attempt of lawmakers to re-write that history, or to blot it out of our memories . This cannot happen. Removing monuments and statues from around the Country, does not change what has happened in the past, but just sows the seeds of discord in our society. By removing memorial monuments of eminent persons of our history we will pass to the next generations a country without roots and without identity.
A possible decision to remove the statue will be an insult to every resident of this city, as well as to every American who cares about history, culture, and art. Thus, we are categorically opposed to the idea of removing the statue of Christopher Columbus from its current place in the middle of Columbus Circle in New York.
We must preserve our History. Do not remove the Christopher Columbus Monument!
