- On January 13, 2016, France passed a law that banned supermarkets from discarding unsold food. In addition, the law required supermarkets to donate the uncontaminated food to charity.
- There should be a similar law in America because Americans alone throw away at least 55 million tons of food annually, which equivalent to 165 millions of dollars.
- Reducing food waste will also improve the environment because food waste emits a lethal greenhouse gas called methane, a gas that traps heat 21 times more than carbon dioxide.
- This law will improve the economy, environment and help people with food insecurity which is an urgent issue in New York City.
