Janet Reich started this petition to Senator Bill Cassidy and

I feel that I along with thousands of other rank and file state workers have been grossly abused and cheated. I have worked in the private sector and paid into the social security system; I have worked for the state and paid into the state retirement system.

I can understand not getting social security had I never paid in, but I should at least get my money back with interest if I can not use it. Everyone should get survivors benefits in their spouse paid into the social security system.

My situation is that I am retired, but each year I have less money to take care of my life needs due to a fixed income. I believe I started working in the private sector in 1977 and for the state in 1989; however I worked after that time in the private sector also, sometimes simultaneously. Although I paid into social security, I will never see a dime of it because I can have either social security or state retirement. When my husband dies, although he has paid into social security for almost 50 years, I will get nothing. Other women will get survivor’s benefits, but not me. Men die about ten years prior to women, so this makes a lot of women living their old age in poverty.

I have voted in every election and could possibly vote for another 20 years. I am asking you to change the law to allow state workers that paid into social security, to be able to get benefits from doing so; I am asking you to change the law to allow state workers to get social security survivors benefits if their spouse paid into social security.
