Cyclists avoid Burton for commutes even though it is a logical east-west artery because the average traffic speed is so high. The proposed road diet will transform this street for bicycle commuters and have negligible impact on vehicle traffic.

Nothing new here--this only adds to the 16 miles of road diets in the City of Grand Rapids. The left-turn lane improves traffic flow and the calmer street increases safety of drivers, bus riders, cyclists, and pedestrians. The quieter street improves quality of life and residential property values. This helps the City legally maintain a lower speed limit (otherwise state law requires speed limit be raised to the speed that 80% of drivers are traveling).

Burton Street is a residential street which is far too easy to speed on because it is so wide. I believe in both improving our road's safety and increasing the bike friendliness of Grand Rapids. The Burton road diet brings the best of both worlds!
