The Beverly Hills Unified School District is planning on implementing a new bell schedule for Beverly Hills High School for the 2021-2022 school year, which can be found here. This new schedule states that periods 1, 3, and 5 will be on Mondays and Thursdays, and periods 2, 4, and 6 will be on Tuesdays and Fridays, while every class will occur on Wednesdays. Period 6 will be an academic class for all students, and athletics will be pushed from starting at approximately 2:00 to starting at approximately 3:00. Most athletic practices will not be finished until 5:00 pm. On game days, students will be missing a large portion of either their period 5 or period 6 class. As buses will generally leave at 1:30 or sooner, student athletes will be missing 1 hour or more of class up to 3 days a week. For many students, this is not an option. Student athletes should not be forced to choose between their academics and participating in a sport. By offering a 0 period and keeping period 6 athletics, coaches can schedule most games on Tuesdays and Fridays, therefore minimizing how much class students are missing. Additionally, this would benefit students in Musical Theatre, Choir, and 2-sport athletes by allowing them to participate in multiple activities, rather than choosing one. With this schedule change, many student athletes will have to give up the sports they love in order to prioritize school, causing the entire athletic program to shrink. The priority of our bell schedule should be the success of the students, and missing class and giving up sports is not conducive to success, happiness, or building strong applicants to highly selective colleges.
