“Yesterday, on the first day of Women’s Month, Police Minister Bheki Cele said that one of the 8 women who was raped in Krugersdorp last week was lucky to be raped by only one man. Our country’s police minister has been in office since 2018 and has made no tangible changes to improve the safety of women and children in South Africa. In a 2020 interview, Cele said that gender-based violence is a societal problem and families should play their part by ensuring that they know who their daughters are going out with. Bheki Cele, who has the duty to enforce the law, will rather victim blame than make changes. Cele is often more worried about alcohol consumption than the 38 people who were killed in mass shootings during July, the 67 daily murders, and 153 rapes. Mr President, we call on you to remove Bheki Cele from office.
