KEEP Mayplace Primary School’s Oakwood Drive Pedestrian Access OPEN

As part of The Primary First Trust’s expansion plans at Mayplace Primary School there has been a submission for new staff car parking spaces at the Top Gate by the Oakwood Drive Pedestrian Access. The head teacher at Mayplace Primary has hinted that this Pedestrian Access may be closed and all pedestrian and vehicle drop-off traffic be directed to the already congested Woodside Road Gate, a half-mile away.
Planning permission has been submitted to Bexley Council which includes new tarmac spaces and a turning head but nothing for a safe pedestrian walkway into the school building which will have to make way for car access to the driveway and new car parking spaces. The existing Oakwood Drive Pedestrian Access has been used for about 40 years and helps alleviate traffic from Woodside Road which is a congestion hotspot, if it were to close as part of the school’s new expansion plans (which in turn would also bring in more traffic in way of new students) it would adversely affect Woodside Road and turn it into a bottleneck to funnel all existing and future traffic to and from the school. This will cause issues, not just for pedestrians who will have to inhale excess road pollution along the extra 800m walk from Mayplace Road East as well as from Old Road for those coming in from the Martens Grove area where both routes are by way of steep and narrow walkways that are unsuitable for parents with buggies or children on scooters. Young and inexperienced primary school cyclists are also in danger of more traffic on the busy roads so many parents will be more inclined to drive and will be parking and causing extra congestion on Woodside Road as many currently park and drop-off from the Top Gate at Oakwood Drive.
A closure of the Oakwood Drive Pedestrian Access would also go against Mayplace Primary’s ‘Transport Statement’ 30th May 2017 document section 3.2.11 which states that “Pedestrian and cycle access points to the school will remain the same as at present”, this document forming part of Mayplace Primary’s planning application 17/01127/FULM and PP-06024197 with Bexley Council (and available to view on the Council’s website).
This affects all parents and students of Mayplace Primary, whether you will be losing a point of access into the school from Oakwood Drive or be met with more than a hundred new bodies and vehicles forced to travel to the Woodside Road Gate (which will also affect the residents of Woodside Road and Woodside Close). The pedestrian access from Oakwood Drive needs to be kept open and if car parking is built, a pathway for safe access to the school buildings must be provided through it.
