The keeping of chickens and bees in Holland Township

In this day and age where people are concerned about the quality of their food, sustainability and helping the bee population from going extinct, It only makes sense that more people are turning to keeping backyard chickens and beehives. In fact cities and townships all around West Michigan have been approving ordinances to allow this and are finding great success. But there is an exception - that is Holland Charter Township. Until they get a citation, many people who have a sizeable piece of property or live near agricultural land but are zoned Residential are unaware this is a code violation because so many townships and cities approve of keeping chickens and bees. That is exactly what has happened to us. We have been doing everything that is possible to do this legally including hiring a lawyer, going to planning committee meetings and paying $300 for a text amendment change per the township request. We even have the ordinance text amendment patterned after the City of Holland. Unfortunately, Holland Township Planning Commission is a board of older gentlemen who are ruling the township as their own little association and not listening to what the people want and need. The Planning Commission has denied our request and it will be moving to the Holland Township Board. We are asking you to sign this petition so either 1) the Holland Township Board will pass our text amendment change request or 2) we will be able to get this on a ballot for everyone in the Township to vote on. We appreciate your support!
