Catherine Varichak started this petition to Representative Betty McCollum and

Conversion Therapy (also known as "reparative therapy") has been denounced as a pseudo-scientific practice by the American Psychological Association, the American Psychiatric Association, and the American Academy of Pediatrics for it's destructive outcomes. Being specifically aimed to turn LGBT+ individuals against their own identities, the practice has a history of causing depression, self-harm, and suicide in its patients. Only fifteen states have banned the harmful practice but the ban needs to be upheld on a federal level in order to protect 100% of vulnerable LGBT+ individuals.

There must be a law to ban conversion therapy on a federal level. This bill will not infringe upon any religious freedoms of patients but rather help them to understand the full ramifications of this practice and require their consent in order to proceed with the treatment.

I am a senior at Mounds View High School in Arden Hills, Minnesota. I am also the Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA) president at the school which brings this topic close to home.
As a requirement for my U.S. Government class, I am to make a public policy bill and, seeing as I have lobbied at the state capitol in order to try and get the statewide bill passed, I figured I would develop one on the federal level. Though this may be just a school project, I would love to see this bill actually be proposed and hopefully passed in order to ensure the safety of my friends and my community across the nation.
