Mining has been a contentious issue in Canada for a long time as the country is responsible for over three-quarters of the world’s mining resources. Mining is proven to cause severe harm to the environment, threaten the health of nearby communities and generate human rights violations in developing countries. As a Grade 10 student, raising awareness and getting involved in this ignored issue can create immense change for Canadians and the communities affected by mining activities. The government invests in the interests of mining companies. Instead of promoting these dangerous mining activities, the Liberal government under Justin Trudeau should work to enforce stronger mining legislation for their global projects. Provincial governments need to regulate the mining projects within the province. By reaching out to the Department/Minister of Natural Resources, Environment and Mines, you will be investing in a better community and safety for Canadians as well as helping those around the world affected by Canadian mining. We must stand for the growing issues within our political institutions and gain the attention of the government to help begin prioritizing the human rights and environment before the profitable mining industry.
