Why this petition matters

Started by Kim Ford

The office of the Orleans Parish Independent Police Monitor opened its doors in August 2009. This office came into being at the request of the community after an onslaught of disparities by the New Orleans Police Department in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.  The appointment of Susan Hudson as our Independent Police Monitor was a win for our community.  However, further issues arrived, including our chosen IPM Ms. Hudson leaving her appointed position to run for and subsequently win the political office of Orleans Parish Sheriff,  we seek the help of the long suffering citizens of Orleans Parish yet again to step up to ensure our safety, transparency and oversight of our New Orleans Police Department.

We strongly believe that the current Acting Police Monitor is NOT the person to prioritize the citizen’s needs and out cries for change and true police oversight. For 9 months this person has sat at the throne of IPM and not shown the capability to provide accountability and oversight to the New Orleans Police Department, and implementing the reforms required under the Federal Consent Decree.  The Office of the Independent Police Monitor (OIPM) is an independent branch of city government that is responsible for providing oversight to the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD), helping build community trust in the police department and receiving public feedback on the police, and working to make the NOPD a safer and better working environment for all officers and employees. However, the New Orleans Ethics Review Board of Ethics continues has included the Acting Police Monitors for consideration.

Please support this effort to help the New Orleans Ethics Review Board aware that a will NOT sit silently if they appoint proven poor leadership to the Independent Police Monitors office.

Our New Orleans Police Department's history is key to why oversight and transparency is critical.
