Add new unit teaching students how to ask for help to public school health education

I am petitioning to the Department of Education and Betsy DeVos in order to mandate in public schools that health teachers nationwide insert an additional unit to the curriculum about how to ask for help and improve communication skills to do so. The current health class system efficiently educates students about important issues, but fails to address how to fix them. I want to see teachers show their students that asking for help is not a weakness.

Independence has become one of the core values and American society, which has deterred people from asking for help, in any situation big or small. Whether it is getting help from the teacher on a homework assignment or getting help to fight depression and prevent suicide, asking for help is a deeply human issue that affects almost everyone.

People fear asking for help will make them appear weak; however, there is so much we are missing out on by not asking for help and ultimately putting ourselves at risk. It is my belief that we need to educate today's youth about how to ask for help because a majority of students do not know how. If they are struggling in school, with their health, or with family finances, many times they do not seek help. I see this as an extreme problem. This is why we need to add an additional unit of coursework to the health education class in public schools educating students how to ask for help regarding education, mental health, and finances to name a few situations.

This effects of this petition would be life-changing for some people, possibly saving lives. The problem is that people, students in particular, struggle immensely with asking for help and this needs to be changed through an additional unit of coursework in the health education class.

I strongly urge you to sign this petition because of the immense effects it will have. It seems like a minor change now, but in the future, students will have better life skills and society as a whole will be bettered. Health education class in public schools provides a foundation for students, yet fails to teach important life skills, specifically teaching students how to ask for assistance in times of need. Sign this petition to save a life or simply help someone achieve their goals.
