Steelbooks are cases for movies and games with custom artwork printed on the metal they are made out of. These are collectible works of art. Despite being made of metal, steelbooks are fragile and prone to denting, bending, and scratching. Unfortunately, Best Buy does not treat steelbooks like the fragile, collectible items they are. Best Buy's shipping warehouses frequently ship them in bubble mailers and cardboard mailers barely thicker than construction paper with no additional protection. This results in steelbooks being received by customers in various states of damage on a regular basis. There are extensive communities of collectors of steelbooks on Reddit, Facebook, and other social media who frequently share examples of this. Unfortunately, Best Buy is frequently the sole place to obtain many steelbooks as they are given exclusive rights to sell them in the U.S in many cases. Steelbook collectors are tired of receiving damaged collectibles and being hassled by support when trying to get the problem corrected (this writer has even been banned from making online returns for the sole reason of not wanting damaged goods). With physical media going the route of being sold online only more and more, buying in person is not always an option. For some people, no Best Buys are available near them. Best Buy has been mum when collectors have tried to address this problem. Many of their support agents don't even understand the product we are talking about or why damage matters. "They're just movies," we are told. They're not, they are collectible items we pay a premium for. So I say to Best Buy, please take care when shipping steelbooks. We steelbook collectors want our steelbooks bubble wrapped and shipped in boxes. Save us the hassle of burdening your support agents with returns and wasting our time. Save yourselves money by cutting down on returns and reshipping, and let us enjoy our collectibles in the condition they were meant to be enjoyed in.
