Create legislation in North Carolina that would allow for recall elections.

By signing this petition, we are asking the NC General Assembly to create a law that allows for recall elections of state legislators and members of the United States Congress. We urge members of the House Elections and Ethics Law Committee and other state leaders to introduce and support legislation that would include, in Chapter 163 (Elections and Election Laws) of the North Carolina General Statutes, a constituent-initiated recall elections statute.
Why is this necessary?
We, the people of North Carolina, demand to have our voices heard, recognized, and considered. Our elected state officials have sworn to uphold the North Carolina State Constitution, which states that “All political power is vested in and derived from the people; all government of right originates from the people, is founded upon their will only, and is instituted solely for the good of the whole.” (Article I, Sec. 2)
Elected officials serving the interests of North Carolina residents therefore need to know that we, the people whose votes put them in office, expect responsive leadership that recognizes the opinions and concerns of all constituents. When elected leaders ignore the people, avoid community or in-person meetings, and fail to provide meaningful venues to address questions and concerns, constituents need access to legal recourse.
According to the National Council of State Legislatures, “Nineteen states plus the District of Columbia permit the recall of state officials”. North Carolina is not on the list. By demanding a recall election process in the state of North Carolina, we are putting our elected members in the state General Assembly and the U.S. Congress on notice--we will not accept the exclusion of our voices from the legislative process.
