The hate and danger faced by trans individuals - particularly transwomen - throughout the world, is unparalleled. Under current ICE policy, trans individuals are immediately detained (effectively imprisoned) while seeking asylum. Given the need to protect such vulnerable individuals in detention, they are most often placed in solitary confinement. This is a horrific and dehumanizing practice for treating highly vulnerable people seeking protection in our country.

We HAVE to stop detaining trans asylum seekers because our current method of doing so is cruel and unusual. In addition, it has no basis in logic. Being trans puts you in credible danger in all countries of the world. I am a therapist who works with trans individuals in NYC, one of the most liberal and free cities in the world. Coming out as trans is a scary and dangerous thing for my patients HERE. Of course they were in critical danger elsewhere.

We MUST change ICE policy to release transgender individuals from detention while they apply for asylum through our legal system. Solitary confinement is not protection; it is torture.

Please see below links for first hand accounts and detailed reporting on the treatment of trans asylum seekers:

To detain trans individuals is to further traumatize the people in most dire need of our protection. As Americans, we MUST demand that our government represent our morals and values better than this.

Is this what we want our country to stand for?
