Private corporations often get a free pass when it comes to violations of the law. Many of these violations involve the environment itself. Air pollution regulations seem to be working less and less. Now although many people would disagree with this, there are statistics that say otherwise. Even though more than 64,000 facilities are listed as being in violation of environmental regulations, fewer than 0.5% of those offenses cause an investigation to follow. The EPA has had to cut it’s Criminal Investigation Division in half due to budget cuts induced by President Trump.

The EPA Criminal Investigation Division carried out just more than 475 criminal investigations in 2001 when there were many more that could have been pursued. If that number wasn’t already low enough, it dropped to less than 300 in 2013. Because prosecutors have been choosing to pursue civil charges instead of these environmental offenses, hundreds of thousands of violations have been dropped. Although the EPA claims that they are working hard to change the way private corporations are prosecuted, there are other ways to get the attention of the government.
