Legalize Psilocybin Mushrooms

This petition had 196 supporters

Psilocybin mushrooms, or "magic mushrooms", are a psychoactive fungus that produce hallucinogenic effects when orally consumed. The active ingredient, Psilocybin, is currently classified as a Schedule I Controlled Substance as part of the 1970 Controlled Substances Act. This implies that Psilocybin mushrooms have a high potential for abuse and no medical uses. The effects of mushrooms usually begin around an hour after consumption and last for about 6 to 8 hours afterwards. The effects of mushrooms are commonly referred to as a "trip."

Historically, Psilocybin mushrooms have been used in religious ceremonies by indigenous peoples for thousands of years. Psilocybin mushrooms have the potential to cause intense spiritual experiences individuals who consume them, sometimes catalyzing life-changing revelations and permanent changes in perspective that help the user improve their life.

Mushrooms containing psilocybin have been shown in studies to help prevent painful cluster headaches, the journal Neurology reported this summer. Another study, by Johns Hopkins researchers, said that mushrooms could help patients with mental traumas and addictions.

For this reason, it has been argued by many that the Prohibition on Psilocybin mushrooms violates religious freedom and inhibits individual spiritual growth.

In comparison to other drugs and alcohol, Psilocybin mushrooms are often regarded as one of the safest psychoactive substances to use and have been found to be relatively harmless in scientific studies. Psilocybin mushrooms are believed to have no potential for addiction and an extremely low toxicity, as no overdose deaths on Psilocybin have ever been recorded:

Because Psilocybin mushrooms are much safer and less toxic to the body and mind than legal drugs such as alcohol and tobacco, and because a ban on Psilocybin equates to a restriction on spiritual expression, we petition the U.S. Congress to remove Psilocybin mushrooms from the list of Controlled Substances
